If someone ever asks me who the quintessential “Dub Master” is, there are only a few names that come to mind. Of course there is Augustus Pablo, Lee “Scratch” Perry and the like. But to me Dub met perfection at the hands of “Scratch’s” protege the Mad Professor. His name probably came from the fact that he has an uncanny skill at meddling with circuitry, but his legend was solidified when he crafted the highest selling dub album of all time for Massive Attack. He is the man responsible for “dubbing out” their second album “Protection” into the the record breaking “No Protection”.
My favourite Mad Professor Dub Album is probably 1989’s “Dub Massacre” in which he turns a passable record from the Twinkle Brothers into a masterpiece. There is something special about what Mr. Airwa does behind the mixing boards, for some reason the way that he uses delays and reverbs has influenced the way we look at music. Let’s not forget “Dub” is the original remix style, and the Professor is widely known as the “Godfather” of Dub.
